The short version

The extension processes the conversation you intentionally open inside your browser. It has no analytics, advertising, tracking, or developer-operated server.

Unsend This Chat for Instagram is an independent Chrome extension that helps a user count and unsend their own outgoing messages in the Instagram conversation they intentionally open. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Instagram or Meta.

Data the extension handles

To provide its single purpose, the extension temporarily handles information already visible in the open Instagram Direct conversation:

  • The current Instagram conversation URL.
  • The visible conversation display name and username.
  • Visible message-row structure and content needed to distinguish the user’s outgoing messages from other conversation content.
  • The state of Instagram’s message controls and action menus while an unsend operation is running.

This can include personally identifiable information, website content, personal communications, and the currently open thread URL. Processing happens locally in the user’s browser and only for the currently open Instagram conversation.

How data is used

The information is used only to identify the open conversation, load its visible history, count the user’s outgoing messages, and operate Instagram’s own Unsend action after the user explicitly confirms.

  • Message content, names, usernames, URLs, and usage activity are not transmitted to the developer or any server. These items are handled transiently and locally only as described above.
  • No analytics, advertising, tracking pixels, or remote code are used.
  • User data is not sold, rented, shared, or transferred to third parties.
  • Passwords, cookies, authentication tokens, and payment information are not accessed or stored.
  • Conversation information is not persisted after the tab is reloaded or closed, or after the extension’s temporary runtime state ends.

Permissions

The extension is limited to https://www.instagram.com/*. This access lets its local content script identify the open Direct conversation, scroll its history, count outgoing messages, and operate Instagram’s native message controls.

The Chrome debugger permission is used only during an explicitly confirmed unsend run. It sends trusted pointer input to expose and click Instagram’s message menu, because Instagram does not expose that menu to ordinary synthetic page events. The debugging session is released automatically when the run completes, stops, encounters an error, or the tab closes.

User control and retention

Scanning begins only after the user selects Scan this conversation. Nothing is removed during scanning. Before unsending, the extension shows the count and requires an additional permanent-action confirmation. The user can stop scanning or unsending at any time.

All processing is ephemeral. The extension has no database or developer-operated backend and retains no copy of conversation data.

Security

The extension uses Chrome Manifest V3, contains all executable code in the extension package, and validates that its actions remain tied to the selected Instagram Direct conversation.

Limited Use

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
